Factorio's Final Major Update, Version 2.1, Is Now Live

Factorio 2.1, the last major update for the expansive industrial simulation game, has been released on its stable branch. Developers Wube Software have added more than 30 quality-of-life improvements and minor new features, incorporating elements that were planned for version 2.0 but did not make the cut due to time constraints.

Among the new additions are changes to how rockets function, allowing them to carry multiple different items in a single launch, eliminating the need to send full stacks of everything for small construction tasks. Land mines can now serve as tripwires and enemy detectors, adding a tactical layer to base defense. The damage dealt by asteroids has also been made more predictable, now depending on the asteroid's remaining health rather than its speed.

The update also offers players the option to disable the controversial quality mechanic in the Space Age expansion. Furthermore, pumpjacks and burner miners can now be flipped, not just rotated, offering more flexibility in factory layout. The game also receives a graphical polish, including new models and an updated pump rendering system designed to connect fluid wagons more reliably.

While version 2.1 marks the end of major content updates, Wube Software has stated that Factorio will continue to receive bug fixes and support. The development team is now shifting its focus to new game prototypes and experiments. Factorio initially launched in early access in 2016 and has since become a foundational title for the automation-builder genre, influencing other games such as Satisfactory and Dyson Sphere Program.
