A new indie action-adventure game, Fading Echo, is drawing comparisons to both Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Spider-Verse films for its unique blend of elemental manipulation and striking visual style. Developed by Emeteria, the game puts players in control of One, a character voiced by Samantha Béart (known for her role as Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3).

Fading Echo's narrative centers on One, a Legend with the ability to transform and manipulate water, as she fights corruption in her fractured world. While the storytelling is described as dense with unexplained proper nouns, the premise effectively sets One on her journey. The core gameplay revolves around One's ability to shift between her human form and a water-blob state. This transformation is key to combat and exploration, allowing for a dynamic playstyle.

In combat, players can utilize One's human form for direct attacks or switch to her blob form to interact with environmental elements. Fire, water, and slime orbs scattered throughout arenas can alter One's blob form, granting temporary abilities. For instance, slime can inflict a 'Weak' status on enemies, increasing damage taken, while combining fire orbs with the water blob can create steam for enhanced mobility, such as reaching higher platforms. The game encourages players to fluidly switch between forms and utilize elemental combinations to overcome opponents, with a strategic emphasis on using the environment, like kicking enemies off ledges.

Beyond combat, Fading Echo incorporates puzzle-like platforming challenges. These often involve navigating One in her blob form through obstacles that her human form cannot pass, such as squeezing through grates to retrieve keys or important items. These sections offer a change of pace from the more action-oriented segments.

The game's presentation is heavily influenced by the Spider-Verse movies, featuring a vibrant art style, on-screen onomatopoeia, and motion comic cutscenes. One's journey through different dimensions, each with distinct visual palettes ranging from dry deserts to aquatic environments, contributes to this aesthetic. A notable early sequence showcases One glitching through multiple dimensions, reminiscent of Miles Morales' cinematic adventures.

Fading Echo is available now on Windows PC, with console releases anticipated later in the year. The game is positioned as a more casual adventure for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender seeking an action-adventure experience, as opposed to a competitive fighting game.
