Filming for the third season of Prime Video's Fallout adaptation has commenced, with actor Walton Goggins, who portrays The Ghoul and Cooper Howard, confirming the news. Goggins posted images on Instagram showing him in the elaborate makeup process for his character, stating he was "back in the saddle" for season three.
The social media posts offered a behind-the-scenes look at the transformation into the character, alongside details like cowboy boots and a scorpion belt buckle. Official Fallout and Kilter Films accounts have since reposted Goggins' content, solidifying that production for season 3 is officially underway.
While Goggins has shared his involvement, fellow leads Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) and Aaron Moten (Maximus) have not yet commented on their participation in the upcoming season. However, their characters are expected to return to continue their respective storylines.
Amazon officially renewed the post-apocalyptic series for its third season in May 2025. The streamer has also announced several new cast members, including Aaron Paul, Emily Mortimer, Manny Jacinto, and Thomasin McKenzie. The roles these new additions will play in Fallout season 3 have not yet been disclosed.
Moten has previously indicated that his character was pitched for a five- or six-season arc, suggesting that season 3 may not be the final chapter for the series. Although a release date for Fallout season 3 has not been announced, the interval between the first two seasons suggests a potential return in mid to late 2027.
The Fallout television series has proven to be a successful adaptation of the video game franchise, with the first season achieving over 100 million views by October 2024. The show garnered 17 Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor for Goggins. The second season received generally positive reviews, despite some criticisms regarding its narrative structure. The series is awaiting further Emmy nominations to be announced.
Potential narrative directions for season 3 might offer clues based on the journeys of Lucy and The Ghoul following their experiences in post-New Vegas. It has been suggested that The Ghoul may be heading to Colorado, potentially with an intervening side quest.
