Fan Uses AI to Resolve Performance Issues in Oblivion Remastered

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, despite its modernization, has been hampered by persistent performance problems. While official patches have been released, significant issues remain. In response, a fan has utilized an AI model to create a mod that substantially improves the game's performance and reduces stuttering.

The PC version of Oblivion Remastered launched in April 2025 with notable technical flaws, a situation not uncommon for games built on Unreal Engine 5. Even after the release of patch 1.2 in June 2025, the most recent update available on Steam, players continued to experience performance degradation. This ongoing struggle with technical issues prompted the community to seek solutions independently.

A Reddit user, known as LTSharp, shared their progress on the ChatGPT subreddit. Their demonstration contrasted the unpatched game with their modified version, showcasing a marked reduction in stuttering. In a video comparison, the unpatched game exhibited 66 hitches, while the AI-assisted patch reduced this number to just 11. This improvement was achieved despite LTSharp not having prior software development experience, driven by disappointment with the game's performance even after a hardware upgrade.

LTSharp identified a key problem as the game reconstructing the entire lighting of a scene in each frame, regardless of whether anything was changing. This process placed a heavy burden on the CPU, which was forced to process this workload on a single thread. By running Claude Opus 5.5 alongside Oblivion Remastered and tasking it with identifying these issues, LTSharp spent two weeks refining a patch through extensive trial and error.

The AI-driven mod appears to improve performance by distributing the workload across more CPU cores. In recordings provided by LTSharp, CPU utilization increased from 35-40% to 50-60%, engaging approximately two additional threads. These tests were conducted on a system with a Ryzen 9 5900X processor, suggesting further optimization may be possible.

This fan-made solution represents a constructive application of AI technology within the gaming sphere, standing in contrast to some of the more controversial uses of AI being reported. The mod has been made available on GitHub, offering a foundation that other developers might expand upon to potentially eliminate stuttering entirely.
