A new trailer for Paramount's upcoming Golden Axe animated series has drawn criticism from fans, who argue that its tone and style closely resemble many other contemporary animated shows.
The series, which features a voice cast including Danny Pudi, Matthew Rhys, Lisa Gilroy, and Liam McIntyre, centers on a group of fantasy warriors attempting to stop the villainous Death Adder from wielding the titular Golden Axe. While the original arcade game was known for its classic sword and sorcery themes, unique mountable creatures, and large-scale battles, the animated adaptation appears to be leaning into a more generalized approach.
Early reactions suggest a pervasive sense of irony and self-awareness in the writing, a characteristic many viewers find overused in modern genre animation. One line from the trailer, "We’re going to do what we do best... Face a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder," has been cited as an example of this meta-commentary.
Fans have voiced their fatigue with this style of writing, often described as similar to that found in shows like Rick and Morty. This sentiment is compounded by the fact that the Golden Axe game series itself has seen no new entries in nearly two decades. The animated series' reception also occurs in the context of other successful, more nuanced fantasy adaptations, including tabletop RPG streams and Paramount's own Dungeons & Dragons movie, leading some to hope for more distinct creative visions in the fantasy genre. Mega Man Elric on X (formerly Twitter) shared a clip that humorously juxtaposed the series' tone with fan expectations.
Despite the criticisms, Paramount is continuing its trend of adapting Sega properties, following the success of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films. The Golden Axe animated series is expected to premiere soon, though the exact release date has not yet been announced.
