The development of the anticipated remake of the PSP dungeon crawler Fate/Extra, tentatively titled Fate/Extra Record, has seen significant changes. Aniplex has stepped in as the new publisher, and the game's development has shifted from Type-Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, a studio known for the upcoming anime fighter Bleach: Rebirth of Souls. This move follows a turbulent development cycle marked by numerous delays and the withdrawal of former publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment earlier this year.

Coinciding with these publisher and developer changes, Kazuya Nino, the director of Type-Moon Studio BB and the original director for Fate/Extra Record, has resigned from his position. Nino confirmed his departure from the studio and the project, citing personal reasons. He has also requested his name be removed from the game's credits to take responsibility for the current situation. In a statement, Nino expressed his apologies to fans for not being able to see the project through to completion and offered his respect for the remaining development team, assuring that the game will meet audience expectations following the restructuring.

Work on Fate/Extra Record has been a difficult undertaking since its announcement in 2020. Originally slated for a 2024 release, the game was indefinitely delayed earlier this year when Bandai Namco withdrew its support, leading to the cancellation of all Japanese pre-orders. The cult-favorite title's journey through development challenges has been a rare public display of issues within the Japanese games industry.

Fate/Extra itself is a 2010 PSP dungeon crawler that garnered positive reception. It is part of the broader Fate franchise, which has spawned numerous adaptations across anime, manga, and video games, evolving from a hobbyist development team at Type-Moon into a major media entity. Type-Moon established Type-Moon Studio BB in 2019 as a dedicated game development subsidiary, with Kazuya Nino, a director known for his work on titles like Trauma Center and Dragon Quest Builders, helming the studio and taking on the Fate/Extra remake as its flagship project.

The official website and social media accounts for Fate/Extra Record are scheduled to close on September 7th. New information regarding the game's updated development status is expected to be released next month.
