When designing the Skitarii class for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, developer Fatshark encountered a unique challenge: detailing the reload mechanism for the faction's iconic Galvanic Rifle. According to lead designer Victor Magnuson, even Games Workshop had not previously defined how the weapon functions in such minute detail.
Fatshark worked in collaboration with Games Workshop to conceptualize the rifle's operational mechanics, aiming for a high level of fidelity within the game. The resulting design borrows heavily from a celebrated piece of gaming history: the M1 Garand. Magnuson revealed that the team sought to "pay homage to a gaming classic, the M1 Garand, which is a weapon I really love using in other games."
The M1 Garand is renowned in shooter communities, particularly in World War II titles, for its distinct handling and the signature "ping" sound it makes when depleted of ammunition and ready for its internal clip reload. For the Galvanic Rifle in Darktide, Fatshark developed a system where a clip of physical bullets is inserted, while the cylinder on the weapon's underside serves as the source of its galvanic charge. "This is the type of weapon we've really wanted to do in Darktide for a long time," Magnuson stated, expressing satisfaction with the final implementation, describing it as "super satisfying to use."
The Galvanic Rifle, characterized by its visual blend of historical firearms and futuristic elements—resembling a flintlock with a glowing under-mounted cylinder—is a distinctive weapon within the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The development team's effort to flesh out its functionality has been met with positive reception from players, including those who have exclusively utilized the rifle as their primary ranged weapon for the Skitarii class.
In addition to the Galvanic Rifle, Fatshark also adapted the Transonic Blades, typically associated with Sicarian Ruststalkers, into a sword and dagger combination for the Skitarii class in Darktide. The new Skitarii class is now available on Steam.
