The filmmakers behind the upcoming Looney Tunes film, 'Coyote vs. ACME,' have shed light on the surprising decision to cast Tweety Bird as a villainous enforcer for the ACME Corporation. Director Dave Green and screenwriter Samy Burch explained that this darker interpretation of the character draws inspiration from Tweety's original, less benevolent, appearances in classic Warner Bros. cartoons.
While Tweety is often perceived as a sweet, innocent victim, particularly in his perpetual chase by Sylvester the Cat, his earliest shorts depicted a more mischievous personality. Screenwriter Samy Burch noted that "Tweety's sadistic," highlighting a tendency to enjoy the chase and actively set up Sylvester for misfortune.
This understanding of Tweety's more unhinged side informed his role in 'Coyote vs. ACME.' "Even in the first pitch I did, this idea of him being a heavy felt funny," Burch stated. As an enforcer for ACME, Tweety finds himself aligned with the corporation's chief counsel, Buddy Crane, played by John Cena.
The film features a standout scene where Tweety, having failed to capture the Road Runner, is confronted by Cena's character in the desert. This exchange escalates into both characters speaking in Tweety's signature "I tawt I taw" cadence, a moment the filmmakers found particularly humorous. "On all levels, the scene is hilarious. The writing and direction are flawless and the desolate desert setting only enhances the comedy," the notes read.
This particular scene's development was somewhat serendipitous. Originally planned to take place in a different setting, a schedule change necessitated a quick rewrite and relocation to the Albuquerque desert. "Everyone put their heads together and it resulted in one of my favorite scenes in the movie," Green commented. He praised John Cena's performance, describing his deadpan delivery as "absolutely deadpan" and noting that Cena provided "so many great versions of anger and temperature."
The filmmakers feel that Cena's immersion into Tweety's speech patterns, even while menacing the bird, demonstrates his comedic range. The film is set to release on August 28.
