DC Studios has unveiled the final trailer for its upcoming R-rated body horror film, Clayface, strategically withholding a full glimpse of the titular character's ultimate form.
Actor Tom Rhys Harries, who portrays Matt Hagen, previously hinted at the transformation to Entertainment Weekly, expressing his anticipation for fans to witness the culmination of the film's extensive creative efforts. In a more recent interview with Empire magazine, Rhys Harries described Clayface's final form as "f***ing sick!"
The trailers have provided unsettling glimpses of Hagen's metamorphosis, including scenes of his face melting and eyelids fusing. However, DC Studios has opted not to fully reveal the Gotham villain's complete appearance, a decision that has been met with approval from fans and critics alike, who feel a premature reveal would detract from the film's impact.
It is speculated that the full reveal of Clayface's final form will occur towards the end of the movie, potentially setting up his integration into the wider DC Universe. While his future appearances remain unknown, director James Gunn's involvement suggests a planned role for the character.
The DCU's current slate includes the final episodes of Lanterns, followed by Clayface on October 23. James Gunn's Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, is slated for next summer, and the HBO series The People v. Gorilla Grodd is currently filming. Beyond these, confirmed DCU projects in active production are scarce, though future films centered on Batman, Swamp Thing, and Wonder Woman are planned.
This latest trailer offers a few more disturbing details, including a shot of Hagen suffocating a victim internally, with the victim's head emerging from his lower back. Near the trailer's conclusion, a brief tease of Clayface's final form appears through the shadow of a growing arm, a bulbous hand, and the slow emergence of the monstrous figure itself.
