Final Fantasy 14 Mobile is set to shut down its services on September 30, marking an abrupt end to the MMORPG's venture into the mobile space. The decision, a result of "adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment," will also cancel any plans for a worldwide release.
The mobile version, developed by LightSpeed Studios, launched in China just over a year ago. It featured a story limited to the base A Realm Reborn content, up to The Ultimate Weapon. Quests, systems, and jobs were streamlined for a mobile-friendly experience, incorporating some features from later expansions. Notably, the mobile version introduced elements that many longtime players of the PC and console version of Final Fantasy 14 desired, such as elaborate hairstyles, improved glamour and materia melding systems, an enhanced inventory, and more engaging overworld FATEs.
Despite these additions, the game has struggled in the competitive Chinese mobile market. Square Enix and Tencent have mutually agreed to terminate their licensing agreement. "To everyone who has been looking forward to the global version, we also offer our sincere apologies for being unable to meet your expectations," the announcement stated, confirming the cancellation of a global rollout.
Service for Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has already been winding down, with new player sign-ups and in-game purchases halted days prior to the official shutdown. The closure mirrors a period of reflection for the franchise, though unlike the original Final Fantasy 14's significant shutdown and relaunch in 2010, which was later incorporated into the game's narrative, this mobile version's conclusion will simply be its service going dark.
