Final Fantasy 14 Players Water Crops for Each Other Amid Server Downtime

The Final Fantasy 14 community has demonstrated its collaborative spirit by stepping in to water player-sown crops while the game's servers are offline. Square Enix suspended MMO login servers on October 21 due to a significant security vulnerability in the PHP programming language, which has affected websites globally and extended to some online games.

This outage left many players unable to log in, impacting those with player housing and the gardening system within the game. If crops are left unwatered for too long, they will wither, leading to a loss of the player's invested time and resources, particularly for rare items like Thavnarian Onions, which take five days to grow after complex cross-breeding.

A Reddit post titled "PHP Watering Service" emerged as a solution, allowing players who could still access the game to offer their assistance. Players needing help could comment with their character's ward and plot location, enabling others to visit and tend to their virtual farms. This initiative highlights a heartwarming display of community support, as watering crops requires no special permissions and is a simple act to prevent players from returning to an empty harvest.

As of this writing, Square Enix anticipated re-enabling logins later the same day, with the game having been inaccessible for many for approximately 18 hours. While not the longest outage in gaming history, the situation has showcased the player base's willingness to help one another.
