Square Enix has announced a postponement of the initial season of rankings for Final Fantasy 14's new roguelike mode, the Crucible of the Unbroken. The decision comes after considerable player feedback regarding combat balance and gameplay mechanics within the new limited job, Beastmaster.
In an official statement posted on the game's Lodestone site, the development team cited concerns that proceeding with rankings under current conditions would make it difficult to ascertain the intended balance of the job and its mechanics, potentially impacting the fairness of the competition.
The core issue appears to stem from the requirements for achieving a high rank and obtaining exclusive rewards, such as the Tourmaline Golem Mount. To qualify for leaderboard placement, players must complete a challenging "third degree" of the Crucible. However, the scoring system incentivizes a highly specific, restrictive playstyle to maximize points. Bonuses are awarded for avoiding certain mechanics and systems integral to the mode, such as using only three familiars instead of the maximum 15, forgoing campsites and gear, and sticking to a single familiar type. This effectively encourages players to "min-max" the fun out of the mode, tailoring their approach to exploit the scoring system rather than engaging with the intended gameplay loops.
This design conflict has led to players seeking ways to "cheese" the system, a common reaction when harsh conditions prompt optimization. The reward structure, particularly the limited-time nature of the mount, exacerbates this, creating a potential for player dissatisfaction that could undermine the mode's reception.
Developers are reportedly working to address the reported issues with Beastmaster's combat balance and specific gameplay mechanics. The exact timeline for the resumption of Crucible rankings has not yet been specified. The Crucible of the Unbroken was introduced as a new limited job and roguelike-style challenge for Final Fantasy 14 players.
