Final Fantasy 14's latest alliance raid series, Echoes of Vana'diel, includes a brief but memorable appearance from Final Fantasy 11's infamous Absolute Virtue. This boss was originally known for its exceptionally long fight duration, with some encounters reportedly lasting nearly 30 hours and remaining undefeatable for three years. Square Enix eventually had to provide player assistance and nerf the boss.
In the Echoes of Vana'diel raid, Absolute Virtue appears only momentarily before being swiftly defeated by Shantotto, the raid's first major boss. This sequence serves to immediately establish Shantotto's formidable power. Masayoshi Ishikawa, a battle content designer for Final Fantasy 14, explained in an interview that while limitations exist on how strong the first boss can be made, the visual spectacle of Absolute Virtue's swift demise, coupled with Shantotto's aggressive black mage abilities and a meteor shower, effectively communicates her strength to players.
This clever inclusion is a loving tribute to Final Fantasy 11, the original MMORPG. The developers deliberately chose to have Shantotto decimate the boss that was once a source of immense frustration for many Final Fantasy 11 players. For those unfamiliar with Final Fantasy 11's history, Absolute Virtue's brief appearance and quick defeat might go unnoticed. However, players who endured the original Absolute Virtue encounters might feel a sense of relief that this iteration is not a challenging boss fight.
Ishikawa also mentioned that the development team considered making Absolute Virtue a boss for The Third Walk, the concluding part of the raid series, but ultimately opted against it. This decision may have been influenced by the fact that Absolute Virtue already exists as a boss within Final Fantasy 14. The Stormblood expansion introduced Absolute Virtue as an encounter in the Baldesion Arsenal, an open dungeon located in Eureka, a region that itself pays homage to Final Fantasy 11. While this existing Absolute Virtue fight is not as notoriously lengthy as its predecessor, its inclusion in Eureka already established its presence within Final Fantasy 14's world.
