The upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has officially received a release date of April 8, 2027. The announcement came during PlayStation's State of Play showcase, which also featured a 10-minute gameplay deep dive highlighting the game's airship overworld.

This new feature allows players to traverse the game's world at high speed, presenting a miniature model of each zone. While not entirely seamless, with a cutscene likely masking loading between selecting a landing spot and parachuting in, the ability to descend anywhere offers a modern interpretation of classic RPG airship exploration. Players can use abilities like Yuffie's grapple hook to explore environments from different vantage points.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, which is reimagining the original PlayStation classic across multiple titles, is noted for its significant time investment. The prospect of another massive, expansive open world following the previous game has raised concerns about potential open-world fatigue for some players. Should Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth offer a similar playtime to its predecessors and not include all optional content, the entire trilogy could require upwards of 150 hours to complete, tripling the scope of the original game.

Despite these concerns about the growing scope, the appeal of exploring vast worlds in Final Fantasy titles remains strong for many. The developers' approach to expanding the Final Fantasy 7 narrative and world across three large games continues to be a point of discussion among fans.
