Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the development team is approaching the creation of the game as if it were the last ever entry in the Final Fantasy 7 saga. This includes any potential future installments, spin-offs, or downloadable content.
"I’m approaching the development of Revelation as if there’s never going to be another Final Fantasy 7 game… no spin-offs… no DLC in the future," Hamaguchi said in a recent interview with Kotaku. "But we’re making it as if everything we have for Final Fantasy 7 is going to be put into this game. That’s why I’ve got this confidence, and I think we’re going to beat the original’s legend. We’re going to become the new legend."
While the future of the Final Fantasy 7 franchise beyond the current remake trilogy remains uncertain, particularly with DLCs concerning Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine reportedly in development, Hamaguchi’s sentiment emphasizes the team's dedication to Rebirth.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is scheduled for release on April 8th, 2027. The game is intended to conclude the remake trilogy, which began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020 and was followed by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024. However, the director's approach suggests a comprehensive effort to deliver a definitive experience within this installment.
Hamaguchi also reflected on the enduring themes of the original Final Fantasy 7, noting its progressive exploration of diversity. "These days, those are big topics and everyone is aware of them; social media gives everyone access to that information," he commented. "But thinking back, Final Fantasy 7 was way ahead of its time when the original was made. Especially in Japan, finding information about things happening abroad back then was not easy. To think that Mr. Kitase and the team put together a game where you see diversity—the variation between party characters, cultures, and people around the world—30-something years ago makes my respect for him even higher."
