The future of physical video game releases is a subject of ongoing discussion, with recent industry shifts prompting developers to consider alternative formats. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, is actively pursuing a physical release for the upcoming finale, "Revelation," while acknowledging that the traditional disc format may not be sustainable.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi stated that internal discussions are underway regarding the specific product lineup for "Revelation." While he could not confirm a definitive physical release at this time, he indicated that "arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition" are being made. This comes as major titles like Grand Theft Auto 6 are reportedly eschewing discs, and Sony is ending new disc production in 2028, adding urgency to the conversation around physical media.
Hamaguchi expressed optimism that "there will always be some kind of physical or packaged edition," but suggested that it might evolve beyond discs. He posited possibilities such as a "box with the code inside it," or "key cards like Nintendo's doing," or even a "boot disc." This perspective suggests a broader definition of "physical" that encompasses more than just playable discs, focusing on tangible collector's items that include digital access.
He reflected on the trend moving towards downloadable games but emphasized the personal value he places on the culture surrounding physical media, particularly the interaction at community events. "I feel like there’ll always be something, and I hope there will be," Hamaguchi said, referring to tangible game editions. He added, "Personally, here at something like Fan Fest or at community events for games that I’ve worked on, I really think that people bringing up things, asking for autographs. I think that’s lovely. I think it’s a wonderful culture and it would be a shame to lose that. I want that to remain."
Square Enix is reportedly examining which format would be "best for the game" and considering each platform's "specific rules and regulations." Hamaguchi hopes these discussions will result in a product that aligns with player and fan desires. He humorously noted the potential backlash if "Revelation" were to launch without any physical edition, stating, "If you publish this, and then we announce all the products later, and there is no physical edition, then they’re going to rip me to pieces."
Square Enix has been contacted by Kotaku for further clarification on the matter.
