Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Discusses Deeper Narrative, Exploration, and Combat

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, has offered a deeper look into the narrative, world map, and combat system of the upcoming finale, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which is slated for an April 2027 release. These details emerged from an interview conducted during the 2026 Paris Game Week.

Narrative Focus and Exploration

Unlike previous installments that might emphasize urgency, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation aims to immerse players in its world by focusing on existential themes and personal character arcs. Hamaguchi explained that the narrative is designed to encourage players to explore the world and engage with non-player characters, making side quests feel integral to the characters' journeys. The impending doom of a meteor on a collision course with the planet serves as a backdrop, prompting characters to understand their motivations for fighting.

The development team has dedicated significant resources to creating a vast, seamlessly loading world map. Hamaguchi noted that as players travel, the game efficiently loads and discards high-detail assets to optimize performance. This exploration extends to areas like the Deepground in Midgar, recently showcased in a new gameplay trailer.

To ensure a balanced experience regardless of player engagement with side content, Revelation features a 'Dynamic Mode.' This difficulty setting dynamically scales enemies to match the player's level, allowing for flexible progression.

Combat System Enhancements

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation introduces the FITS system, an optional combat mechanic designed to add complexity and player customization. This system assigns traits that alter a character's battle style. Hamaguchi and battle director Teruki Endo have playtested the game extensively to ensure it is beatable with or without the FITS system.

Players will have the ability to create up to five loadout presets per character, allowing them to tailor materia, weapons, and equipment for different scenarios. These loadouts can be switched between battles, offering greater strategic depth and flexibility.

Future Projects

Director Naoki Hamaguchi expressed his desire to continue working on future Final Fantasy titles. While his immediate focus is on delivering Revelation, he indicated that potential future projects include the next installment in the series, the development of a new AAA intellectual property, or leading another remake series. He also believes that future remake projects should be handled by different teams, suggesting a shift in focus for his personal contributions.
