Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will allow players to access its Hard Mode from the outset, a change from its predecessors Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which required players to complete the games before unlocking the tougher challenge. This new approach aligns with Revelation's reimagined game design, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi.
Hamaguchi explained to Hardcore Gamer that Hard Mode in Revelation “won't function in the exact same way” as in previous titles. The development team “reimagined the high-difficulty experience to align with the new game design.” He noted that the world of Gaia becomes accessible much earlier in Revelation, with Cloud and his companions able to reach challenging areas and battles via their airship from the start. This necessitated a shift in how difficulty is implemented.
"Hard Mode is selectable from the very start of this game," Hamaguchi stated. "Therefore, players who want to tackle challenging battles and high-difficulty gameplay right from the beginning can enjoy that experience from their very first playthrough. This is because, unlike Remake and Rebirth, Revelation offers a wide variety of end-game content even after you've beaten the game. Rather than relying solely on the traditional flow of challenging Hard Mode after beating the game, we aimed to create a game where players can enjoy various new content and challenges even after completing the main story."
This change is a welcome one for players who found the earlier installments' toughest challenges locked behind lengthy playthroughs. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation potentially exceeding 100 hours for full completion, the ability to engage with Hard Mode from the beginning offers immediate access to the game's most demanding combat.
Additionally, Hamaguchi confirmed in a separate social media post that Revelation will feature a Dynamic Mode at launch, similar to Rebirth. This mode is designed to provide consistently challenging battles throughout the game. The flexibility will also extend to mini-games, allowing players to adjust their difficulty.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
