The physical editions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the concluding chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga, will necessitate a full game download, a departure from the series' previous installments. Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which shipped on multiple discs and offered a playable experience out of the box, Revelation's physical version will function more as a license key, requiring players to download all game data online. This applies to all planned platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Square Enix has confirmed via its website that an internet connection is a mandatory requirement for playing the physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The exact amount of data that will be on the disc, if any, remains unclear. However, for the Nintendo Switch 2 version specifically, the game card will solely act as a key, obligating users to download the entire game, which is reportedly a staggering 130GB. This file size alone would consume over half of the console's internal storage.

File size details for the PlayStation and Xbox versions have not yet been disclosed, but it is anticipated they will also be substantial given the scale of the title. The third and final entry in the Remake trilogy is set to be the largest game in the series. Yesterday, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi announced a global release date of April 8, 2027, for all platforms: PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This simultaneous worldwide launch marks a first for the series.
