Physical editions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will necessitate a download to access the full game, a decision Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi states was made to avoid compromising the RPG's quality. The reasoning behind this approach is rooted in the limitations of physical media capacity across current platforms.
"Each platform has limitations when it comes to physical media capacity, but we believed that compromising the quality of the final chapter in order to achieve a fully on-disc release would ultimately not be in the best interest of many fans," Hamaguchi explained in a statement. While acknowledging that this decision may not meet all player expectations, he highlighted the value of offering a physical edition at all in an increasingly digital market.
This approach contrasts with the previous entries in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. Both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were released on two discs each, allowing the entirety of their content to be contained on-disc. Fans have suggested that a similar multi-disc solution could have been employed for Revelation.
Currently, the physical PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will come with one disc, while the Nintendo Switch 2 edition will include a game key card. All formats will require an internet connection for an additional game data download. The discussion around physical media continues to be a prominent topic, particularly following Sony's announced plans to cease new PlayStation game disc manufacturing by 2028, a move that has drawn considerable reaction from consumers.
