Naoki Hamaguchi, director for the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, has revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is projected to be approximately 200GB, a scale that makes a complete physical release impossible on current disc technology. This means that even the physical edition of the game will require a substantial download to be playable.
Hamaguchi discussed the game's immense file size and the implications for its physical release in an interview with VGC. While the 200GB figure is an estimate and could increase as development continues, it far exceeds the approximately 100GB capacity of a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X disc. Consequently, the physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will include a single disc containing partial data, with the remainder needing to be downloaded by players.
The director acknowledged that this approach might disappoint some players, but he emphasized a desire to offer a physical product in an increasingly digital market. He noted the ongoing shift towards digital distribution, particularly on the PlayStation platform, making physical media's role more complex.
However, Hamaguchi also pointed out a benefit to requiring a download for the physical edition: players will have immediate access to any day-one patches or hotfixes. This ensures that fans will be able to experience Final Fantasy 7 Revelation in its most updated and optimized state upon release. The game is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.
