Composer Kumi Tanioka, acclaimed for her work on Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, has voiced her confusion and denial regarding an album appearing on Spotify under her name. The EP, titled "A Village Built on Wind," has been falsely attributed to her, prompting Tanioka to address the situation on social media.
Posting on X, Tanioka expressed uncertainty about whether the album was created by another individual with the same name or if it was generated using artificial intelligence. "This album is definitely not something I made," she stated. Tanioka is a verified artist on Spotify, a designation indicating her authenticity as a creator, yet the EP was still linked to her profile without her apparent involvement in its submission.
Digital Sonic Design, a publisher of some of Tanioka's music, has also released a statement. The company confirmed that while the tracks do not infringe on Tanioka's copyright, their false attribution could mislead the public. They noted that the songs are labeled as AI-generated on YouTube Music, highlighting a discrepancy in how the content is presented across platforms. The publisher suggested this situation exploits vulnerabilities within streaming service platforms and raises concerns given past instances of unofficial tracks being recreated and distributed.
This incident highlights growing concerns within the music industry about the misuse of artist names and the proliferation of AI-generated content on streaming platforms.
