Voice actors in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth discussed the challenges and joys of their roles, particularly highlighting how they draw inspiration from their fellow cast members despite often recording in isolation. At a New York City Comic Con panel, the actors revealed who they most enjoyed working with, even if it was only through hearing their recorded lines.
Max Mittelman, the voice of Red XIII, mentioned frequently requesting Cait Sith's lines to be played for him in the booth, citing his admiration for the accent. Matt Mercer, who voices Vincent, found his scenes with Yuffie particularly engaging. "It’s been so fun to listen to the energy you’re bringing to it and figure out how I could just be the wall that stops it," he stated, referring to Yuffie's performance. Suzie Yeung, the voice of Yuffie, echoed this sentiment, texting Mercer, "I love our scenes together. It’s gonna be amazing."
John Eric Bentley, who plays Barret, expressed excitement over new material not present in the original game, particularly interactions with Paul Tinto's Cait Sith and with the female cast members. "Anything I get to do, counterbalance with the girls is outstanding, but this dude, we got some real fun stuff coming," he noted.
Britt Baron, Tifa's voice actor, shared that she rarely hears other performances until the game's release. However, she occasionally gets to hear Cloud's lines, voiced by Cody Christian. Baron praised Christian's performance, stating, "your performance always is, and I felt like I was like, ‘Okay guys, we have to pick up more than just that one line of mine because I sound like trash compared to what he’s doing.’ So I do feel like you bring out the best in all of us."
Christian, in turn, spoke highly of Baron's portrayal of Tifa, highlighting the nuance and subtlety she brings to their scenes. He also mentioned being inspired by Travis Willingham's performance as Sephiroth, describing the villain as a "lifeforce" for Cloud. "You trigger me in a way that like no one else could. You bring out emotions, though, that are very strong and just truthful," Christian said.
Briana White, Aerith's voice actor, also singled out Britt Baron, lauding her ability to portray Tifa as both soft and strong. "We complemented each other so well in so many of the scenes that we got to do together that it’s just absolute joy," White remarked.
Caleb Pierce, Zack's voice actor, credited Briana White's performances with helping to ground his own energetic delivery in the recording booth. Travis Willingham, the voice of Sephiroth, jokingly dismissed Mercer's performance before praising Max Mittelman, mentioning his son's affection for Red XIII. Mercer also shared his perspective as a long-time fan of the series, expressing relief and admiration for the cast's dedication to their roles.
J. Michael Tatum, voicing Cid, recounted his own lifelong connection to the Final Fantasy VII franchise. He noted that hearing his colleagues' performances, many of whom he considered exceptionally talented, motivated him to deliver his best. "You guys made it so easy, so easy. I just had to show up and do what was there and, and it was perfect," Tatum said.
Cody Christian concluded by emphasizing the emotional depth of his scenes with Briana White, calling them a "cathartic experience."
