Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is shaping up to be a substantial entry in the series, with game director Naoki Hamaguchi indicating that the title could demand a massive 200GB of storage space. This potential file size poses a significant challenge for players, especially those with the base PlayStation 5 console, which offers approximately 667GB of usable storage.
In an interview with VGC, Hamaguchi acknowledged that the game's size is such that it would not fit on one, two, or even three physical discs. "In a word, yes. Things are still getting worked out, but it's probably going to be around 200GB of game," he stated. He further explained the team's perspective, noting, "I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent."
For many players, a 200GB download could necessitate the removal of other large games from their systems. Titles that already occupy significant storage, such as The Elder Scrolls Online, Ghost of Tsushima, Infinity Nikki, and Mortal Shell 2, often exceed 100GB, making the prospect of fitting Rebirth a difficult calculation.
Despite the digital-only nature of such a large download, Square Enix remains committed to a physical release for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Hamaguchi emphasized this commitment, saying, "One thing I want to say is, even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy VII Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product. That was really important to us. Trust me!"
While an official file size has not been confirmed, given the game's projected 100-hour playtime and the possibility of two post-launch expansions, the immense storage requirement seems plausible. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
