Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to demand a significant chunk of hard drive space, with director Naoki Hamaguchi estimating the game will occupy approximately 200GB. This substantial requirement contributes to the necessity of a mandatory download even for physical editions.
In an interview with VGC, Hamaguchi acknowledged the storage concerns but stated the necessity of pushing hardware limits. "At the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent," he explained. The expansive open world and the commitment to laying the entire planet out for players are cited as contributing factors to the game's considerable size.
One element contributing to the increased file size is the expanded piano minigame. This feature, which was present in the original Final Fantasy VII as a way to earn Tifa's ultimate limit break, Final Heaven, has been significantly enhanced in Rebirth. Hamaguchi noted that the minigame now offers more in-depth information related to Tifa, providing players with lore and character details as a reward for their musical efforts. While the original game's piano rewards were primarily materia, the expanded version in Rebirth aims to offer a deeper narrative connection, particularly for fans invested in Tifa's character arc.
