Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Stressed Faithfulness to Original Masterpiece

The development of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has been guided by a commitment to preserving the essence of the original PlayStation game's narrative, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi. Speaking with Edge magazine, Hamaguchi emphasized the importance of not deviating from the established core story to satisfy potential fan reactions or personal creative impulses. He stated that the team has been building each installment without wavering from the central theme established at the series' outset.

"It wasn’t easy," Hamaguchi shared, as reported by Gamesradar. "I felt it was absolutely essential to avoid turning a masterpiece like FFVII into something that felt like my own personal fan project."

The remake trilogy has introduced new narrative elements, such as the Whispers—entities that work to maintain the original timeline's destiny—and expanded world-building. However, Hamaguchi indicated that no major plot points have significantly diverged from the source material thus far. The primary challenge, he noted, was not simply incorporating changes or new interpretations, but ensuring that the resulting work could still be authentically recognized as "FFVIIR."

While the original Final Fantasy VII concluded with a somewhat bleak and unresolved ending that left many characters' fates uncertain, Hamaguchi suggested that the development team resisted the urge to create a more conventionally "happily ever after" scenario that fans might have desired. The approach prioritizes maintaining the integrity of the original story over fulfilling long-held fan wishes for alternative outcomes. The full scope of how the narrative will conclude will be revealed in the upcoming final installment of the trilogy.
