Square Enix has updated the free trial for Final Fantasy XI, the 24-year-old MMORPG, removing previous restrictions on playtime and character progression. The move aims to attract new players to the veteran title.
The updated trial now allows players to access the entire base game content without any time limits. Furthermore, the level cap for characters has been raised to 75, a substantial increase from the previous cap of 50. This update offers a more accommodating entry point compared to the trial's original limitations, which included a 14-day time limit and a single character level cap.
Final Fantasy XI, which began its life on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, was Square Enix's first foray into the massively multiplayer online role-playing game genre. It later received PC and Xbox 360 ports, with console services ending in 2016. The game has seen numerous expansions and additional scenarios released over the years, with the latest content arriving only a few years ago. Interest in the original MMORPG also saw a boost in 2025 due to narrative connections established in Final Fantasy XIV.
Despite its age, the game retains a dedicated player base. The previous free trial was frequently criticized for being overly restrictive when compared to the more generous trial offered for Final Fantasy XIV. While the new trial for Final Fantasy XI is more open, some limitations remain. Free players are restricted to the base game content, cannot accumulate more than 100,000 gil (in-game currency), and are unable to trade or use the auction house. They can join other players' parties but cannot form their own.
This revamped free trial is expected to help Final Fantasy XI continue to find and engage an audience, potentially extending its lifespan for many more years to come.
