Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida has admitted he doesn't quite understand the immense popularity of Chort, a sub-boss from the game's recent dungeons. The boss, characterized by its large, rolling form and the humorous stance it takes before engaging players, quickly became a fan favorite and the subject of numerous internet memes.
During a press Q&A at the game's Berlin Fan Festival, Yoshida expressed his surprise at Chort's reception. "I'm really glad to hear that Chort was so well received, but honestly I couldn't really understand the appeal of Chort," he stated. While acknowledging the memes and popularity, Yoshida found it difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for the creature's widespread appeal, though he offered a tentative understanding: "I mean, this is some huge bulky guy, and then suddenly he's standing there and then he rolls. So from that perspective, I can kind of understand."
The unique naming convention of the dungeon, The Clyteum, also contributed to the playful reception of Chort for some players, with the combination of the boss's design and the dungeon name evoking unintentional humorous undertones.
Despite his personal bewilderment, Yoshida emphasized the development team's enjoyment of seeing the community engage with the game in unexpected ways. "It's really fun for us to see," he told reporters. He encouraged players to continue sharing their reactions and finding appeal in future content, assuring them that the development team actively monitors social media responses and values this feedback. "So, if the people in the community also find some unexpected appeal in any content we produce moving forward, do make your voices heard because the development team is looking at all of the responses on social media, and we very much do enjoy looking at them. We have big smiles on our faces when things like this happen."
