Final Fantasy XIV is set to receive a significant crossover with one of the series' most iconic titles, Final Fantasy VII, in its upcoming expansion, Evercold. Announced at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin, the expansion's eight-player raid series, titled "Beyond the Lifestream," will delve into the world and characters of Final Fantasy VII. This marks a substantial integration of Final Fantasy VII elements into XIV's Eorzea, a move that has been relatively rare despite the series' history of weaving in themes and characters from its past installments.
The collaboration was revealed by Final Fantasy XIV Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida alongside Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Remake Director Naoki Hamaguchi. While specific details about which characters or plot points will be featured remain scarce, the promotional materials prominently displayed Cloud and Sephiroth, suggesting their likely involvement in the raid series. The development teams for both titles are collaborating closely on the project. Motomu Toriyama, a veteran Square Enix developer and co-director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, is contributing to the raid's story, under the supervision of Kazushige Nojima, the original Final Fantasy VII's writer. Tetsuya Nomura, known for his character design work, is also involved, hinting at distinctive raid gear designs.
In addition to the raid series, an update to the Gold Saucer is scheduled for October 28. This update will introduce an attraction directly inspired by the Gold Saucer from Final Fantasy VII, complete with a typing game. Hamaguchi humorously noted during the keynote that a typing game might not be the most immediate association players would make between the two games, yet it will be incorporated.
The integration of Final Fantasy VII into Final Fantasy XIV's narrative and gameplay through the "Beyond the Lifestream" raid series represents a significant event for fans of both titles, particularly after a 13-year wait for such a substantial crossover. The announcement has generated considerable excitement, with speculation arising about whether Sephiroth could serve as the climactic final boss of the expansion's concluding raid tier.
