Nintendo's latest Nintendo Direct for Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave has revealed several key details about the upcoming title, including a significant departure from previous entries in its protagonist management and the introduction of firearms. Unlike its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fortune's Weave will allow players to experience the narratives of all four main protagonists—Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora—within a single playthrough.

Players can switch between the four leaders and their respective factions by visiting the Pale Raven's Perch, enabling them to engage with each character's story in parallel rather than requiring multiple playthroughs. This approach extends to a five-year time jump midway through the game, a narrative structure that further aligns Fortune's Weave with the Three Houses era of the series. Following this jump, the world faces the threat of the demon god Balor, and the original heroes have disappeared.

New Mechanics and Classes

The class system in Fortune's Weave will follow familiar Fire Emblem conventions, featuring tiered progression: Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced. Players will begin with five beginner classes that introduce basic weapon types such as swords, spears, axes, gauntlets, and bows, alongside magic. Subsequent specialty and advanced classes will be determined by individual character proficiencies and chosen class paths, unlocking unique units like elephant riders and dragoons.

The game also introduces "Combat Arts," special abilities available to all recruitable characters that consume weapon durability to inflict damage or provide support. Unique to the four main protagonists are "Blaze Arts," which draw from the character's health bar in exchange for potent attacks. Cai can unleash area-of-effect fireballs, Dietrich can teleport for tactical repositioning, Leda can summon monsters using her instrument, and Theodora can launch large rocks over significant distances.

A notable addition to the arsenal is the inclusion of guns. These are categorized under gauntlets, despite offering ranged capabilities similar to bows. The presentation of these firearms has been noted for their modern appearance, including details like laser sights on what appears to be a Glock-style weapon.

A New Protagonist Emerges

After the five-year time jump, a new protagonist named Eshmel is introduced. This white-haired character, previously featured in key art without a name, is described as a progenitor god called forth by Sothis to combat Balor. Eshmel possesses a connection to the mechanism that allows players to switch between the original four protagonists and can also utilize the goddess Fortuna to travel back in time.

The narrative presents Eshmel with a critical choice: confront Balor directly or travel back to alter the events of the Heroic Games. Similar to Three Houses, this decision will likely involve recruiting one of the four original protagonists to aid in the fight against the demon god, potentially limiting the player's narrative path to a single chosen faction.
