Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave has introduced several significant changes to Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' long-running tactical RPG series. Beyond the ability to experience all four heroes' stories in a single playthrough, sharper writing, and a larger cast of recruitable characters, the game also boasts numerous smaller mechanical tweaks that contribute to its elevated status.
Inventory Management Streamlined
A notable improvement is the overhaul of inventory management. Previously, trading items between characters or accessing the protagonist's broader inventory required dedicating a full turn. Fortune's Weave now allows players to trade and use items within the same turn, a change that significantly impacts tactical decisions. This allows for more aggressive positioning on the battlefield, as units can heal or receive supplies without sacrificing their movement or an attack opportunity. The benefit extends to magic users, who can now focus on offense rather than support.
Weapon Durability Reimagined
In contrast to earlier entries like Three Houses and Engage, where all attacks depleted weapon durability, Fortune's Weave modifies this system. Normal melee attacks and counterattacks no longer consume durability. Only the more powerful Combat Arts impact a weapon's lifespan. This encourages players to equip their best weapons more frequently and utilize Combat Arts more strategically. The change makes these special abilities a more consistent part of combat, rather than a resource to be conserved for specific situations.
Undead Encounters Require Tactical Adaptation
Fortune's Weave features battles against undead enemies that require a shift in strategic approach. These enemies are highly resistant to most standard attacks, making them vulnerable only to specific magic or specially designed weapons. This design forces players to adapt their team composition and equipment loadouts on the fly, preventing reliance on brute force alone. Successfully defeating these foes, especially rarer silver and gold variants, can also yield substantial experience and currency rewards.
Efficient Item Purchasing
A seemingly minor but impactful change is the ability to purchase multiple items at once from vendors. Previously, players had to buy items like healing supplies or gifts individually. The latest installment allows for the selection of multiple item types simultaneously, significantly speeding up the process of stocking up, particularly when clearing out a market's available goods.
