A new manga series based on the recently released Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave is offering players a chance to explore the stories of characters who have received limited attention in the main game. The manga, which debuted on the Nintendo Today app on September 16, a day before the game's launch, follows the prologue of Fortune's Weave and appears to address player concerns regarding character supports.
New Characters Introduced
The first chapter of the manga focuses on Seteth and Orchel as they travel to Dagsion to meet with the Divine Sovereign. Their journey is interrupted by Cai, who intervenes to stop a thief. This early interaction introduces all the Flame Lords, including Dietrich, Leda, Cai, and Theodora, as well as sub-lords Talimun, Bertrand, Anatolia, and Orchel, and their respective factions. While the prologue concludes before delving into the Heroic Games, the introduction of these characters and their affiliations has drawn attention.
Addressing Character Support Issues
One of the most significant criticisms leveled at Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave since its release is the perceived lack of support conversations between certain characters, particularly between sub-lords and their retainers, such as Talimun and Ursula, or Orchel and Diego. Players have also expressed a desire for more time to get acquainted with the sub-lords themselves.
Information from an Intelligent Systems Ask Me Anything session revealed that Fortune's Weave was initially planned with eight protagonists, a number later reduced to four, with Eshmel added to connect their storylines. However, the characters who were cut—Talimun, Anatolia, Bertrand, and Orchel—still feature in the game's prologue as Flame Lords, alongside Leda, Dietrich, Cai, and Theodora. This suggests that Intelligent Systems had ambitious plans for these lords that could not be fully realized within the game itself.
Manga's Potential to Expand Narrative
Even if a downloadable content expansion does not further develop the sub-lords' storylines, the Fortune's Weave manga adaptation presents an opportunity to explore these characters and their relationships in greater detail. This approach has precedent, as the manga for Fire Emblem Engage expanded on the backstories of characters like Yunaka, who had a past as an assassin not extensively covered in the main game. It remains to be seen how the manga will progress, but there is a clear desire among fans for more insight into Talimun, Anatolia, Bertrand, and Orchel and their retainers.
