Game Science has released 15 minutes of gameplay footage for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, offering the first in-depth look at the action RPG sequel and its titular protagonist, the Chinese mythological deity Zhong Kui. This new gameplay showcases combat and provides a clearer picture of the game's world compared to its predecessor, Black Myth: Wukong.

The footage suggests a greater emphasis on engaging with non-boss enemies, a departure from Wukong's primary focus on boss encounters. While Wukong's world was less populated, the new gameplay implies more varied encounters. The animations highlight detailed combat, featuring weapon entanglement where blades clash and parry, reminiscent of titles like Phantom Blade Zero.

A boss encounter is featured in the video, pitting the protagonist against a large, moth-like humanoid creature with barnacle- and scale-covered wings. The battle is lengthy, eventually involving the summoning of a warrior companion, which the player then directly controls for significant damage.

Game Science has stated that while the studio aims to retain elements players loved in Wukong, Zhong Kui will be tailored to its new protagonist. The developer also cautioned that the game remains a work in progress, and the showcased footage may differ from the final release, with some elements still being experimental.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui was announced approximately one year ago during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025. The game is currently in development for PC and major consoles, though a release date has not yet been announced.

Previously, prior to Wukong's release, Game Science faced accusations of sexism and inappropriate remarks from senior staff, as reported by IGN, with some women describing a negative studio culture. Studio co-founder Feng Ji has also been associated with misogynistic comments online.
