Epic Games has introduced a new reactive feature to Fortnite with the recent addition of Five Nights at Freddy's cosmetic skins. The Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy skins offer a unique visual effect not previously seen in the game: their character models visibly break apart and degrade as the player sustains damage during a match. This damage effect persists until the player is eliminated or the match concludes, even if their health is replenished. Players have the option to disable this feature in the locker or choose to have the skins appear perpetually damaged.
While other Fortnite skins have featured reactive elements, such as visual changes tied to music playback or audio cues upon securing a kill, the Five Nights at Freddy's skins introduce a new category of reactivity based on player damage. Previous damage-related effects have been less permanent, like Isaac Clarke's health bar flashing red, Synth's jacket glitching, or Spider-Punk changing colors temporarily. Skins that permanently change upon achieving a certain number of kills, such as Midas or Marigold variants that turn gold, have also been released. The closest existing cosmetic effect is the Botch backbling from Dumb Ways to Die, which shows wounds when health is lost, but these wounds repair when the player heals.
The inclusion of this permanent damage effect aligns thematically with the aesthetic of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, where the worn and damaged appearance of the animatronics is a key visual element. This new reactive feature allows Fortnite to integrate both pristine and degraded versions of the characters within a single cosmetic item.
