The Nintendo Switch has built an impressive library of games, and Nintendo has continued to enhance its offerings with special "Switch 2 Editions" of some of its best titles. Games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Kirby and the Forgotten Land have already received such treatment, with Pikmin 4 — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy on the horizon. However, several other standout games from the Switch's lifespan could significantly benefit from a similar upgrade, either through technical enhancements, new content, or better integration with potential next-generation features.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Following the release of the Switch 2's Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, an updated version of Fire Emblem: Three Houses feels like a natural fit. The 2019 tactical RPG was a major hit for the series and offered a deep, engaging experience. A visual and performance boost would align it with Fortune’s Weave, but the real draw would be bundling all existing content, including the Cindered Shadows DLC. The addition of alternate costumes for characters appearing in both games, like Seteth, could serve as a welcome bonus.
Super Mario Odyssey
If a new 3D Mario adventure is still some time away, an enhanced edition of Super Mario Odyssey would be a welcome substitute. Given Nintendo's practice of re-releasing enhanced versions of its flagship titles, an Odyssey upgrade seems probable. While the game holds up well visually, bundling it with content like Bowser’s Fury from Super Mario 3D World would be ideal. Such a package could offer a compelling standalone experience and a taste of what a future, larger-scale 3D Mario game might offer.
Super Mario Maker 2
It is surprising that Super Mario Maker 2 has not yet received a Switch 2 Edition, especially considering its potential synergy with the new console's features. The prospect of creating levels with mouse controls is particularly appealing. Beyond that, Nintendo could integrate elements from Mario Paint to create a comprehensive creative suite. Including a Super Mario Bros. Wonder theme for levels would also be a valuable addition to this already robust creation tool.
Luigi’s Mansion 3
Luigi's Mansion 3 is a standout title that deserves more attention. An enhanced Switch 2 version could significantly improve the experience, particularly by targeting a smooth 60 frames per second, which would highlight the developer's intricate animations. The game also offers ample opportunities for additional content, such as expanded multiplayer modes, new minigames that leverage mouse controls, or entirely new story-driven DLC.
Game Builder Garage
Game Builder Garage, a game development tool released in 2021, is currently incompatible with the Switch 2 due to its reliance on the original Joy-Cons. An update to ensure compatibility, even if only for preservation, would be beneficial. More significantly, integrating mouse controls would greatly enhance the tactile experience of creating games, fulfilling the tool's potential as an educational and accessible platform.
