Florence Pugh has credited Tom Holland with initiating her cameo as Yelena Belova in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." Pugh, who portrays Yelena in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appeared in a memorable scene at a New York bathhouse, interacting with Peter Parker.
Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Pugh explained that the concept for her inclusion began years prior when Holland expressed a desire to collaborate with her. When asked by a journalist which Marvel character he would most like to see Spider-Man interact with next, Holland specifically named Pugh. This suggestion, amplified by fan excitement, set the wheels in motion for her appearance in the film.
"This all happened because of Tom," Pugh stated. "Years ago when I had just begun my relationship with Marvel and Black Widow had come out, and Yelena obviously wasn't as big as all of the other big superheroes, he [was asked,] 'Who do you want to do the next movie with? Do you want it to be with Thor?' And he said, 'No actually, I want to do it with Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena.' And because of that, fans were so excited about the idea of it, and that started the ball rolling."
Pugh also shared her favorite line from the movie, which involves a humorous exchange with Peter Parker about the scale of their respective responsibilities. Pugh characterized Yelena's perspective as dealing with "big potatoes stuff," contrasting with Peter's focus on "small potatoes stuff."
"Potatoes!" Pugh exclaimed when recalling the moment. "When do you get to say 'potatoes' to Tom Holland and it get taken seriously?"
There is potential for further interactions between Spider-Man and Yelena. Reports indicate that an extended cut of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is planned for re-release in theaters, featuring additional scenes. One such scene is rumored to include the return of Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.
