Football Manager 27 is shaping up to be a significant return to form for the long-running football management simulation, according to early impressions. Developers at Sports Interactive have focused on refining the user interface and introducing a more robust tactical system, aiming to recapture the series' strategic depth and immersion.
A UI Course Correction
Following feedback from Football Manager 26, which saw a notable shift in UI design, FM27 appears to be rolling back some of those changes. "We've got rid of most - if not quite all - of the cards-and-tiles UI that gave FM26 its notoriety," the preview notes, suggesting a return to a more traditional and navigable interface. Head of design Rémy Boicherot explained that while last year's transition to a new engine presented significant technical challenges, this year's focus has been on gameplay and community resonance. "We focused all our efforts into this. It was really a consolidation year," Boicherot stated, emphasizing a desire to integrate new philosophies with a more familiar feel and increased efficiency.
Senior features manager Ant Farley acknowledged that the previous iteration, built from the ground up, left little room for iteration, resulting in a game that was strong for single-team focus but introduced friction when navigating the wider world. The move away from an overreliance on tiles for navigation, a concept he described as powerful in theory but potentially imbalanced in practice, aims to rectify this. The navigation bar has been reorganized, and the "portal" now more closely resembles a traditional inbox, leading to fewer navigational dead ends.
Introducing Tactical Effectiveness
The headline new feature is the "tactical effectiveness" system, which replaces the old tactical familiarity gauge. This new system is influenced by four sub-categories: tactical understanding, player ability, player buy-in, and next match info. These, in turn, are affected by a deeper layer of tactical elements such as passing style, pressing intensity, and chance creation. This complexity aims to mirror the considerations of real-world managers.
Boicherot cited Pep Guardiola's approach at Manchester City as an inspiration, noting how the manager waits for players to fully grasp his vision before deploying them. The system is designed to reflect the nuanced decision-making managers face, such as whether to implement simple, easily understood tactics for short-term gains or complex strategies that require more time to master. The game now provides a clearer representation of how player attributes, tactical understanding, and the complexity of instructions interact.
Reworked Training and In-Game Adjustments
Complementing the tactical effectiveness system is a significant rework of the training modules. Sessions are now categorized into tactical understanding, match preparation, footballing development, and physical and recovery. This recategorization allows for more targeted improvements, directly influencing the tactical understanding component of the new system. Developers have incorporated concepts like "tactical periodisation," where training sessions simulate match scenarios, drawing inspiration from real-world coaching methodologies. Farley noted that insights from professional managers have been crucial in shaping these changes, particularly in understanding how tactical plans are communicated and executed.
Further refinements include the return of touchline shouts, enhanced by a "Tweaks" system that allows for one-touch tactical adjustments during matches. These Tweaks, such as instructing a team to push higher or step off the press, remain active until consciously deactivated, promoting a more dynamic in-game management experience. Boicherot described this as an effort to capture more of a "duel" experience against opposing managers.
Additional improvements include better implementation of international management training, a visual revamp of the 2D engine, and adjustments to player running speed and fatigue mechanics. The onboarding experience has also been tweaked with more manager customization options. Overall, Football Manager 27 aims to be more accessible and faster to play, while offering its deepest tactical simulation to date.
