Andrew Lakeman, a former developer for Old School RuneScape, has been sentenced for his role in stealing and reselling in-game gold and items. Known within the game's community as "Mod Jed," Lakeman was arrested in 2019 by Cambridgeshire police on suspicion of defrauding his employer, Jagex. After a protracted investigation, he has been handed a sentence that includes 150 hours of community service, 25 days of rehabilitation, and a three-year suspended prison term.
Lakeman, who was hired by Jagex in 2015, secretly siphoned virtual assets from players. He then laundered this in-game currency and items through secondary markets and cryptocurrencies. The discrepancies were first noticed by Jagex's support team in 2018, who initially suspected a temporary glitch. However, as the thefts continued, an internal investigation was launched, leading to the discovery of the developer's illicit activities.
Despite initial denials, evidence from Lakeman's devices and financial records indicated that he had amassed nearly half a million dollars through these activities. Communication logs also suggested he had boasted about his scheme to his wife, detailing plans to target high-value accounts before leaving the company. Detective Constable Andrew McKeane of the Cambridgeshire police emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating, "Lakeman was well aware what he was doing was wrong. The hundreds of thousands of pounds he gained from selling the in-game items is no different to any other theft. Just because it's virtual, doesn't mean he shouldn't face the full force of the law."
This case highlights ongoing issues surrounding in-game economies and their intersection with real-world value. The popularity of virtual goods in games like RuneScape, Roblox, and Fortnite, particularly among younger demographics, has drawn increased legal scrutiny globally. The dispute over virtual item markets is further exemplified by upcoming proceedings where Valve will face the New York State Attorney General regarding their own in-game markets, including loot boxes and reseller platforms.
