Fortnite's Chapter 7 Season 4, titled "Override," is launching with a new array of collectible creatures, referred to as "sprites," each offering unique abilities that level up through gameplay. This season continues the trend of sprite-collecting that proved popular in the previous season, building upon its mechanics with a gaming-centric theme.
Sprites are found either within chests scattered across the island or roaming freely. Once a player collects a sprite and equips it, they gain a special ability. These abilities can be leveled up through continued use, and collected sprites can be saved for future matches by extracting them at designated sites or by achieving victory.
The new season introduces 11 sprites at launch, with several drawing inspiration from iconic gaming franchises. Notably, three sprites are linked to Sonic the Hedgehog, who is a featured character for the season. These include the Sonic Sprite, which increases sprinting speed; the Tails Sprite, which allows for mid-air hovering and negates fall damage; and the Shadow Sprite, which passively reloads weapons. Other new sprites include the Klombo Sprite, which provides random items as it levels up through consuming health items; Killswitch Sprites, offering bullet time and aerial control while aiming down sights; the Bush Sprite, which periodically places the player in a bush; the Jonesy Sprite, which restores health and shield after taking damage; the Adventure Sprite, which upgrades an inventory item at each level; the Crown Sprite, which grants bonus crowns after a victory and levels up through wins; and the 8-Bit Sprite, which adds a score multiplier to the next shotgun found. The Jackrabbit sprite offers a double jump ability.
While the core gameplay loop of collecting, leveling, and extracting sprites remains consistent, the introduction of new abilities presents a learning curve for players. A significant addition to the season is the Sprite Garden, a new mode developed with Unreal Editor for Fortnite. This persistent space allows players to interact with their collected sprites, serving as a display for their collection. Sprites collected in Season 3 will be available in the Sprite Garden alongside new ones from Season 4 and beyond, ensuring the garden acts as a lasting showcase for player achievements.
