Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, subtitled "Override," is set to launch on August 20, bringing a wave of iconic video game characters and environments into Epic Games' battle royale. The season's theme, dubbed "Gaming Legends" by Fortnite, has been widely anticipated due to numerous leaks and early reveals.

The first trailer for Override showcases protagonist Jonesy navigating an island brimming with references to beloved gaming franchises. Players can expect to encounter characters such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sonic the Hedgehog, his adversary Dr. Eggman, Tails, the Joker from Persona 5, Mega Man, and fighters from Mortal Kombat including Scorpion, Raiden, and Kitana. The trailer also features The Deer from Roblox's "99 Nights in the Forest," and introduces an original Fortnite character named Geno who plays a significant role in the season's narrative.

Gameplay elements within the trailer further emphasize the gaming crossover theme. Jonesy is seen collecting a 1-Up coin, racing through a Green Hill Zone-inspired area reminiscent of Sonic, utilizing Mega Man's signature Mega Blaster, and evading falling Tetris blocks.

The "Gaming Legends" theme had been heavily speculated for some time, fueled by leaked key art featuring characters like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, as well as a prematurely released Sonic the Hedgehog crossover comic. Earlier teasers had already hinted at collaborations with franchises such as Persona 5 and Pac-Man. While leaks also suggested a Kingdom Hearts crossover, this has not yet been officially confirmed.

In addition to the upcoming season, a new island titled "Smuggler's Gambit" has been added to Fortnite. Developed in partnership with Disney and Epic Games, this island is inspired by the Smuggler's Run ride at Galaxy's Edge and allows players to undertake tasks for Hondo at Mersa Vera Station. This addition further highlights Fortnite's ongoing focus on pop culture collaborations.
