Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, subtitled "Override," has launched, leaning heavily into millennial video game nostalgia with a wide array of crossover content. The season introduces characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, and Crash Bandicoot, with many appearing in the latest battle pass and more teased for future updates.
New Weapons and Crossovers
The season's theme is a celebration of video game history, reflected in its loot pool. Players can acquire the Kingdom Key from Kingdom Hearts and Rebecca's Guns from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners later in the season. Day one additions include the Mega Blaster arm cannon from Mega Man. Fortnite's original additions include Midas' Masterpiece, a new pistol capable of one-shot headshots. More details on the complete loot pool are expected.
Battle Pass and Character Lineup
Chapter 7 Season 4's battle pass features eight new characters. Sonic the Hedgehog is an instant unlock, a departure from previous seasons where highly sought-after characters were typically placed at the end. Tails is also included in a "Sidekick form." Other skins available include Kitty Wins, Phantom, Grace Crowne, Geno, Mali, Bastian, and a customizable character named Wrixel. Launch week players receive a bonus alternate skin for Grace Crowne and her accessories. Gifting the battle pass to a friend unlocks a bonus Peril Peak skin for Mali. Beyond the battle pass, teased crossover skins include characters from Kingdom Hearts, Mega Man, Persona 5 Royal, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, 99 Nights in the Forest, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro The Dragon.
Sprites and Map Transformations
The new season retains last season's sprites in a new "Sprites Garden" mode, allowing players to interact with and display them. New sprites are also being added, including crossover variants. The Sonic Sprite provides a speed buff, the Tails Sprite enables mid-air gliding, and the Shadow Sprite passively reloads weapons. A comprehensive guide to all sprites in Chapter 7 Season 4 is forthcoming.
The Fortnite map has undergone significant changes, with the introduction of Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog. Tetris elements have also appeared, with large Tetrominos scattered across neighborhoods. Hints of a Pac-Man collaboration are visible through ghost-shaped clouds and a landmass resembling a ghost in the water. An arcade has also been added. Many regions on the island, unrelated to specific IP crossovers, are themed around hardware components, tying into the season's broader gaming and hacking motifs.
The Overrides Mechanic
A new gameplay mechanic, "Overrides," has been introduced. These are buffs that players can discover and apply during matches. Overrides come in two forms: Override Consoles, which affect all players, and Squad Overrides, which are team-specific but also reveal the team's location. Available Overrides include Sonic Speed, More XP, Loot Hack, Extra Life, Big Fish, Constant Heal, Infinite Stamina, Headshot, Overshield, Speed Shooter, Big Loot, and Power Pickaxe.
Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 is expected to receive further updates to its loot pool, map, and shop content over the coming months, with the annual Fortnitemares event anticipated for October.
