Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, which launched this week, has introduced new gameplay mechanics and a fresh loot pool for players to explore. However, concerns are emerging that a significant increase in the number of AI-controlled bots in Battle Royale matches may be making it harder for players to genuinely improve their skills and achieve Victory Royales.

Analysis from X user Au5la, utilizing Fortnite Discord servers, indicates a marked decrease in the presence of human players and a corresponding rise in bots per match. Previous seasons reportedly featured between 58 and 65 real players, while the current season has seen this number drop to as low as 25. This shift could undermine the original intent of introducing bots, which Epic Games stated in 2019 was to "help players improve their skill level" and to eventually offer a bot-only training mode.

Players are reporting that matches often consist of engaging with numerous bots before encountering skilled human opponents. This can lead to a false sense of accomplishment against weaker AI and a subsequent struggle when facing actual players. Such an experience may foster frustration rather than motivation, as players find themselves eliminated in the top ranks despite feeling they have progressed through the match. Many players, like Au5la, express a preference for challenging real opponents, stating "the joy from fighting actual real players far outweighs fighting bots all game until the last few teams."

While some players claim to not be encountering an unusual number of bots and are instead facing highly skilled opponents, the prevailing sentiment from reports suggests an increase. This has led to speculation that Epic Games may eventually enhance bot AI, as hinted at in past communications. Anecdotal evidence also suggests bots are capable of impactful actions, with one player reporting "The Order" AI companion sniped an opponent who had eliminated them.

Despite these developments, improving the game's skill-based matchmaking system is frequently suggested as a more effective solution for player development than increasing bot presence. Alternatively, offering players the option to opt out of bot-filled lobbies could address player dissatisfaction while still providing a less challenging environment for those who prefer it.
