Fortnite is rolling out a significant promotion, giving players a chance to acquire a special token that unlocks 14 days of free access to nearly everything in the in-game Item Shop. This initiative, part of the new Treasure Hunters mini-season that began November 1, appears to be Epic Games' strategy to retain players amidst the looming launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The in-game item, known as the Item Shop Token, can be found within chests during any battle royale match, regardless of team size, game mode (Build or Zero Build), or match ranking. The benefit extends to teammates; if one player finds the token, all squad members in that round receive it as well. The token must be redeemed by December 15, 2026, and grants the user an additional token for a future two-week period in 2027.
While the promotion offers a vast array of cosmetic items, emotes, and other digital goods, certain exclusions apply. Items purchasable with real money, such as V-Bucks and some skin bundles, along with battle pass levels, are not included. Players are also limited to one Sidekick (companion characters) and cannot gift items to others for free.
This promotion arrives as Fortnite's player count has seen a notable increase. During U.S. daytime hours, Fortnite's battle royale modes are attracting approximately 2 million players, a figure about four times higher than the average in October. This surge in engagement is further boosted by the current One Piece tie-in event.
Epic Games' decision to offer such substantial in-game value is seen as a direct response to the anticipated impact of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to release on November 19. The effectiveness of this strategy in maintaining Fortnite's player base post-GTA 6 launch remains to be seen, but the prospect of acquiring a significant amount of in-game content for free is likely to generate considerable player interest and activity in the short term.
