The first major expansion for Forza Horizon 6 is set to release in January 2027, Playground Games has announced. Since its launch in May, the game has maintained a consistent cycle of weekly challenges and a steady influx of new vehicles, a typical pattern for the live-service racing series.
This upcoming expansion, currently referred to as "the first Premium Expansion for Forza Horizon 6," will be available on January 21st, 2027. Players who own the game's premium edition, premium upgrade, or expansions bundle will receive it automatically. Those who have not purchased these bundles will need to acquire the expansion separately.
Playground Games has not yet revealed specific details regarding the expansion's theme or content, stating that more information will be shared closer to its release. The studio has confirmed that a second expansion is also planned for a future release.
Historically, Forza Horizon 5's expansions received mixed reviews. The Hot Wheels add-on, featuring sky tracks reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto V, and the Rally Adventure add-on, both currently hold mixed ratings on Steam. In contrast, the Fortune Island expansion for Forza Horizon 4 was better received, offering a new map area with engaging scenery and flowing roads that complemented the game's established atmosphere.
For Forza Horizon 6 to maintain its critical acclaim, including the "bestest best" rating from its review, future DLC will need to surpass the quality of its predecessor's additions. The developer's ability to deliver a compelling and concentrated experience, perhaps with a stronger focus on unique Japanese aesthetics as suggested by the game's setting, will be key.
In related news, Microsoft, the parent company of Playground Games, is currently facing a boycott from the BDS movement due to alleged connections to the Israeli military. The company has also conducted significant layoffs this year, impacting thousands of employees across its studios.
