A free point-and-click adventure game based on the cult British children's television show Knightmare is in development and is slated for release next year on PC. The project is officially licensed and will include voice work from the original cast.
Led by writer and designer Ewen Watson, the game aims to mark the 40th anniversary of the original Knightmare series, which aired on ITV between 1987 and 1994. Creator Tim Child has reportedly given his blessing to the development team. The game's art has been hand-drawn, with the developers emphasizing that "everything you see and hear is made by real humans."
Knightmare challenged teams of young contestants who, guided by a Dungeon Master, would direct a fourth member through a treacherous, hand-painted dungeon. Players navigated mazes, solved riddles, and cast spells, all while attempting to avoid various perils.
For the game adaptation, several cast members are returning to reprise their roles. This includes Hugo Myatt as Treguard, Mark Knight as Lord Fear, Clifford Barry as Brother Strange, Edmund Dehn as Gumboil the Knight, Iona Kennedy as Greystagg, and Paul Valentine and Alec Westwood as the jesters Motley and Folly, respectively. Notably, the game will omit the life force meter from the show, a decision made to allow players sufficient time for exploration.
The game is described as a short adventure, with an estimated playtime of around two hours. As it will be free-to-play, there are currently no plans for a console release. The original TV show itself saw a brief return in a one-off special episode released on YouTube thirteen years ago.
