A wave of protests across France, fueled by a cost-of-living crisis, has unfortunately seen some individuals exploit the chaos to loot stores. Amidst this unrest, a video game store employee from Nice has gained viral attention for his efforts to defend his shop.
Pierre, a sales assistant at a Micromania branch, was captured in social media footage attempting to prevent rioters from entering the store. In one clip, he is seen trying to push people away but is subsequently kicked to the ground. "At one point, I just stood in front to keep people from getting inside — that’s all," Pierre told ICI. Despite his efforts, the store was looted, and Pierre sustained an injury from projectiles.
Reflecting on the incident, Pierre stated, "I can’t quite process what happened. That might come a bit later, once the dust has settled. I don’t think I should have done it, honestly. It was foolish. But in the moment, that’s what I did." He expressed gratitude for the messages of support he has received, but also emphasized that the protests stem from genuine issues affecting working people globally. Pierre cautioned against generalizing the actions of a few, noting that such behavior is the exception, not the rule, and that most of the demonstrations proceeded peacefully.
Other businesses in Nice, including JD Sports, Decathlon, and Foot Locker, were also affected. In total, 15 businesses reportedly sustained damage. Authorities arrested 85 individuals in connection with the violence, with 40 of them being minors.
A fundraiser has been initiated to assist the Micromania store in Nice with repairs and recovery. The fundraising page states, “Following the events and demonstrations this Saturday, the manager of our Micromania Jean Medecin in Nice unfortunately suffered damage and was cowardly attacked by groups of vandals, while bravely defending his shop.” The initiative aims to show community support for those affected by the events.
