A French retailer, LDLC, briefly listed a compact gaming PC that served as a competitor to Valve's Steam Machine. Initially dubbed the 'Stim Machine' before being renamed the 'LDLC PC Box,' the system utilized standard PC components and was offered as a self-assembly kit for approximately €1,000. A pre-built version was also available for €1,040, placing it in direct competition with the European pricing of the Steam Machine. The offering included a tutorial for installing SteamOS.
The LDLC PC Box featured an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU, which offers more compute units and a newer architecture than the Steam Machine's custom RDNA 3 card. The processor was an AMD Ryzen 5 8400F, comparable to the Steam Machine's 6-core/12-thread AMD Zen 4 chip. The compact build utilized a standard Mini-ITX motherboard, allowing for 16GB of upgradeable DDR5 memory and 500GB of NVMe storage with two additional SATA ports. For comparison, the Steam Machine includes a 512GB internal SSD and a microSD slot.
Despite offering comparable specifications for under a thousand euros, the price was still considered high for the gaming performance it provided, especially given the context of memory supply chain issues. The LDLC PC Box is no longer available for purchase.
