October is shaping up to be a significant month for horror enthusiasts, with Peacock's upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, titled Crystal Lake, emerging as a particularly anticipated release. A new trailer provides an extensive look at the show, delivering the kind of content fans expect from the iconic franchise.
The trailer centers on Pam Voorhees, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, as she settles into the Crystal Lake community and its local summer camp alongside her young son, Jason. The narrative unfolds with the tragic drowning of Jason, an event that plunges Pam into profound grief. She appears tormented by her son's death and harbors a sense that he may still be present, preceding a series of unexplained and gruesome murders within Crystal Lake.
The new footage highlights a notable amount of classic horror gore. The series, set to begin in 1971, has shifted the timeline for Jason's death earlier than the 1957 date depicted in the original film. This prequel aims to explore the events leading up to the franchise's well-known bloodshed.
Crystal Lake is set to premiere on Thursday, October 15, exclusively on Peacock. The series will consist of eight one-hour episodes, all of which will be available on launch day. Brad Caleb Kane serves as the creator and showrunner, with a cast that includes William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom alongside Cardellini.
Speaking about the pressures of developing a project with such a significant legacy, Kane discussed balancing the series' graphic horror elements with psychological thrills. He also offered insight into the potential visibility of Jason Voorhees in the series. While a hockey mask will not be featured, as the story predates the events of later films, Kane indicated that Jason will be seen, potentially quite clearly. "They'll see more than they think they will," Kane stated, further teasing the character's presence.
