Despite the recent success and upcoming releases of multiplayer-focused titles such as Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has reassured fans that the studio has not abandoned its commitment to single-player experiences. He stated that the confluence of these multiplayer projects is purely coincidental and not indicative of a strategic shift in the company's overall direction.
Miyazaki explained in an interview with IGN that the studio maintains a strong focus on single-player content. "This is just something that happened to work out the way it did," he said, referring to the timing of the multiplayer game releases. "There was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other."
While acknowledging the enjoyment derived from developing multiplayer games, Miyazaki emphasized that these experiences scratch an itch that ultimately reinforces the desire to return to single-player development. "Personally, it's very fun to make a multiplayer game like this," he noted. "It's not something we've done a lot and we're looking forward to seeing players' reactions and getting feedback." However, he concluded that "the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again."
FromSoftware, renowned for its challenging single-player RPGs, including titles like Sekiro and the Souls series, has seen significant critical and commercial success with its narrative-driven, solo-player adventures. The studio's consistent output of high-quality single-player games has cultivated a dedicated fanbase eager for its next offering in that vein.
