Gabe Newell, the co-founder and president of Valve, has become the subject of widespread online discussion following his appearance in a video message to open The International 2026, Dota 2's annual championship tournament. The reaction online has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users expressing admiration for Newell's significantly slimmer and seemingly healthier appearance.
During the video, which was broadcast to kick off the prestigious esports event in Shanghai, Newell delivered a standard address reminiscing on past tournaments, looking towards the future, and thanking the fans, players, and host city. However, the internet's focus quickly shifted to his physical transformation. Fans and observers took to platforms like Reddit and YouTube to share their surprise and appreciation.
Discussions on Reddit, such as one titled "New Chad Gabe Look Just Dropped," highlighted sentiments like "I’m so happy he lost all that weight" and "I'm just happy he looks healthy! More time among us." Some commenters even playfully referred to him as "Babe Newell."
The reasons behind Newell's changed appearance were a topic of speculation. Theories ranged from a "life-on-a-yacht lifestyle" to medical intervention. A particularly popular, though likely lighthearted, theory suggested he was "slowly absorbing australian genes through osmosis due to living in new zealand for so long," leading to comparisons with actor Hugh Jackman. While Jackman is considerably younger than Newell, the resemblance in their current looks was a recurring theme in online comments.
Similar sentiments were echoed on YouTube, where viewers noted his healthier look. One comment read, "Lord Gaben is getting healthier, love to see it." Many observed that he appeared slimmer than in previous public appearances, including his message for The International 2025.
Newell's trimmer physique is not a sudden development but rather a continuation of a transformation that has been noticeable over the past few years. Compared to his appearance in 2022, he has shed a significant amount of weight. The addition of a new haircut and a trimmed beard also contributed to his refreshed look during the tournament opening.
While the outpouring of adoration for a public figure like Newell can seem unusual, his reputation as a tech mogul who built a successful company without selling it off, and who then pursued personal interests away from the spotlight, has often garnered him a different perception compared to other billionaires. His noticeably improved health and appearance at The International 2026 have clearly resonated positively with the gaming community.
